Planned South projects within Healthcare

Renovation and extension project delivery room Gunjur H / C and Siffoe H / C (2021)

Unfortunately our 2020 project trip did not went the way we planned, and we had to end the trip earlier due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, many plans that could have been were canceled on the spot ...

Before this trip came to an end, we did have extensive meetings with the Senior staff of the Gunjur H/C & Siffoe H/C and we discussed again where the greatest needs lie. There remains a need to realize previously agreed improvements, but from a practical point of view we could better include this in a large project renovation project:

  1. It turns out that, due to the growing population in the province of Kombo South, we should completely renovate and enlarge both delivery rooms. The old postnatal unit and the old delivery room will have to become one in order to create sufficient delivery beds for the supply of patients.

  2. This includes a newborn resuscitation table with the minimum required facilities (suction, oxygen, heat lamp). This is essential in every delivery room to prevent preventable neonatal and maternal deaths (SDG 3.2, UN).

  3. The open windows that are now in both rooms will be replaced by closed sliding glass windows. This creates more opportunities for hygienic matters.

  4. We will place a separate cabin with toilet in the delivery room for the women in labour.

  5. We will built-in storage cupboards with key for needed supplies in the labour ward during work.

  6. We will place more capacity delivery beds.

  7. We will replace the old unsafe sockets and install new safe sockets.

We strongly believe that these renovation projects are realistic and in line with our vision and goal, namely to support and improve mother and child care (SDG 3 "Healthcare and Well-being", UN). We create a safer environment for mother, child and local care provider and can thus prevent avoidable deaths in mothers and newborns. We will provide training to the local health workers of these centers to be able to work with new installations.

The estimated cost for this renovation project is around € 1500 for each of both delivery rooms.

This includes: renovation work, remuneration of local construction staff / electrician / plumber, remuneration of the local Mamafrika team, loan of work material, purchase of (building) material, purchase of built-in cupboards, purchase of collection table, ....

  • Your contribution, however small, may be deposited into the project account of Mamafrika vzw - BE44 3631 9222 5445

  • For this project to be realized, we naturally need the founds, but also volounteers who want to carry out the renovation work (not only people who work in construction can register). Volounteers can register through this contact form .

We hope to be able to carry out the first delivery room renovation (in Gunjur H/C) in March 2021. Should we not be able to start this project in March 2021, this will be postponed. A delay is not a cancellation . The second delivery room renovation (in Siffoe H/C) is done right after this.
